The night wasn’t especially nice to us up at the ABC. We both slept fitfully, waking up frequently and wondering whether or not we were coming down with altitude sickness. A room temperature of 30 F/ -1 C didn’t help much, but thanks to our thick sleeping bags we still managed to get a few hours of shut-eye.
Outside, the Annapurna Sanctuary was putting on a show. I’ve never quite seen a sight like that before: the golden morning light illuminating the enormous mountains that surrounded us on all sides. Despite the early hour, the people present (including us) were alert and excitedly hopping around taking pictures.
Most people just stayed on for a short while after breakfast before heading down. We decided to spend the morning up in the ABC – neither of us had any problems with the altitude, so we decided to don our warmest gear and head up to a nearby ridge. We wanted a better look at the mighty glacier below, as well as having a look at what was around the corner. While we did want to reach a point just above the snow line, once we got to the snow section we didn’t feel confident enough to continue – not without poles, ice axes or at least better snow boots. We did, however, get the views we wanted. Congratulating each other on reaching our destination, we sat down to listen to the glacier and stare at the pure beauty of nature.
As nice as the ABC was, we didn’t particularly want to stay there for another night. After indulging in a pot of milk tea, we began our descent. The day’s target was Bamboo – one of the many trekking lodge settlement along the Modi Khola river valley.
There is little to report from our descent – it was a bit sad to know that the trek was nearing its end, but at the same time we were beginning to look forward to the luxuries of civilization.
We arrived in Bamboo fairly late in the day, where we found a comfortable lodge to spend the night.
