Day five of our trek can be summed up in one word: climb (or, alternatively: pain).
The day started in Tatopani, a little trekker’s village that sits in a river valley at 1,190 meters/3,904 feet. From an early morning start at 7:30, we climbed for seven hours, gaining 1,670 altitude meters/5,479 feet to reach our destination of Ghorepani, at 2,860 meters/9,383 feet.
Climbing, climbing and more climbing
And when I say climb, I mean stair climbing. To put that in perspective for you, imagine yourself arriving at work, climbing on a Stairmaster (with between 15 and 20 lbs on your back) and climbing (almost) your entire work day.
Granted, we had some stunning scenery to keep us company and devoured at least 15,000 total calories each to keep up stamina, but still! It was one crazy climbing day. Some fellow trekkers we met along the way divided the day’s climb into two days, sleeping somewhere in between the two towns, Ghara perhaps. Either way, we had to face the fact that the route we were walking on is no longer followed by a road. There would be no more buses, or any motorized vehicles of any kind for the remainder of the trek. Leaving the road and heading east on the footpath marked the beginning of our Annapurna Sactuary trek and if you are getting anywhere on that trek, it’s on your own two legs.
