Alas, the report from the fourth day of our glorious trek will be a short one. Here’s the thing: the Nepalese have cut a road along the once popular Jomsom trek. This has dramatically lessened the popularity of trekking in this part of the Annapurna region, because it isn’t much fun to hike through beautiful surroundings only to have to dodge a bunch of lazy-butts traveling in chartered jeeps. Progress can’t be stopped, and you can’t really blame people for wanting to have a road that connects them to the rest of the world.
We spent the morning sitting on the bus between Jomsom and Tatopani. It was a bouncy and uncomfortable ride, one that mercifully ended just before lunch. The video below gives you an idea of what it’s like in that part of the world.
Tatopani itself is a pleasant little nest, located snugly along the side of a river. There’s a hot spring by the river, but it didn’t manage to look inviting enough for us to hop in. This was to be our last ‘rest day’ for a while, so we decided to eat well and go to bed early. Yes, we were boring, but the next day proved that being boring was an excellent choice.
