I first came to know Bill Bryson as a fellow travel writer, though putting myself in the same category is stretching it a bit. As I only write for this little website, which we can safely say won’t be my last job, Bryson has been incredibly prolific> He has written books that cover everything from travel writing to the entire History of Nearly Everything. As I’ve already reported on the later book in a rather fawning way on this site, you can safely assume that I’m a fan.

I found Shakespeare while glancing through the autobiography section of our local bookstore (perhaps taking up Gore Vidal’s advice that the only books worth reading these days are autobiographies) A Shakespeare biography by Bill Bryson? Count me in!

A brief 195 pages later, I am ever so glad that I found this little gem. Peppered with Bryson humor, the life of The Bard is delivered in unsentimental and vivid detail. That is, as vivid as is possible, since very little is actually known about the man or his day-to-day life.

It’s a fun, quick read; one that will make you feel, even for a little while, that marching out to buy Shakespeare’s Complete Works is a good idea (though maybe not the best idea for us backpackers).
