    First Impressions of Kathmandu

We’re in Kathmandu, Nepal, and we like it. Compared to Delhi, this is a paradise of cleanliness. The air is fresh and eminently clear, and there are no cows mucking through the garbage on the streets.

Right now we’re staying in the Thamel district, a warren of medieval streets chock-full of shops that cater mostly to tourists. While it is fun to wander around in here, we’re moving to the more laid-back area known as Freak Street tomorrow. Freak Street got its name in the sixties, in honor of the first overland travelers to reach the area. I guess they must have been freaks of some kind. We had lunch there today and it seemed tidy and relaxed.

    Next up: house hunting.
