• Ayutthaya – Thailand’s ancient capital

An hour-long bus ride north from Bangkok brings you to Ayutthaya,  the laid-back ex-capital of Thailand.

A little history: Established in 1350, the city saw 33 kings over the course of 417 years before being sacked by the Burmese in 1767. The city was abandoned following the invasion, leaving the ruins of countless religious buildings and palaces. In recognition of its historical and cultural importance, the location of the ruins were declared a UNE SCO World Heritage site in 1991.

A great way to spend a day: The city center is surrounded by rivers, creating a small easily navigatable city. We rented bicycles ($1 each for 24 hours) and biked around town temple hunting. We also hit up the night market for dinner, which was A-mazing.

All in all – a great escape from Bangkok if you find yourself stuck there with too many days to kill. I would have happily stayed in Ayutthaya one or two more days.
