Although it is not anywhere near as developed as the US, it still does have a LOT to offer. Especially tourism-wise. Most of the country has almost incredible sites. Regarding Transilvanya, I am sorry to disapoint you, but there's no such thing as "garlic at the entrance gate" or "shadowy and creepy landlords that sacrifice virgins" (this second part because it's getting harder and harder to find virgins :)) I recommend you either to look up for some guide (some young folk(s) that are willing to show you around) or, when you get where you want to get, just go in the nearest town for a coffee and ask a few of the young people there to give you a tour of the surroundings. There's a very good chance you'll "pick-up" a guide FAST (most of them speak quite good english). As for Bucharest, it's a city of contradictions. You have to visit it, and you will see why. You will love it, as long as you don't go on an "official tour". Ah, and I almost forgot: Mexico City is even MORE than what you've described. It will amaze you in so many different ways, you won't even be able to remember what you loved more.  There you will REALLY need a local guide: you really don't wanna end up in some parts of the city, as a "gringo" that can't even ask for Tacos in spanish. Don't be scared though :) I don't know where you're from, but just imagine the "sketchy" parts of a bad neighbourhood in the US. Kinda the same. Sorry for the long post.
